EXIMER LASER METHODS

LASIK

Lasik is the most commonly used method in refraction-surgery. This method was used for the first time in 1989 by Prof. Dr. Pallikaris in Greece. At the Dünya Eye Hospital over 2000 eye treatments are performed each month.

With this technique, initially a corneal flap is created using an automatic device (Mechanic Keratome). The patient will feel no pain during this procedure.

This membrane is then lifted, a laser beam is sent to the central part of the cornea for approximately 50 seconds and the surface is reshaped in order to correct the refractive defect. During this application, the patient is asked to fixate on a red or green light.

Following laser correction, the flap is repositioned. No sutures are necessary. Protective contact lenses may be fitted. The patient is then released from hospital.

At the Dünya Eye Hospital keratome knives are disposable and for 1 time personal use only.

INTRALASE LASIK

A new technology for refractive surgery treatment of refractive defects like myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism: Intralse Lasik. Intralse involves raising a disc of cornea as a flap with a computer-controlled laser light. The flap's position, diameter and thickness are determined preoperatively. Intralase minimises the risks involved during the flap creation stage of this procedure. Intralase lasik provides the opportunity to create a customised flap and thus increases the success of the surgery on most patients. Creating a flap with intralase can be carried out according to the patient preferences, or, for some patients, our doctors may advise this procedure, due to the characteristics of the cornea.

Only disposable supplies are used for Intralase treatment. Thus minimalising chances on infections to zero.

PRK

This is a laser treatment where no flap is created. The most superficial surface of the cornea gets softened and after that will be put aside for the laser treatment.

LASEK

With this treatment the most superficial surface of the cornea is softened with an alcohol-solution and rolled up. After the laser treatment has been completed, the surface of the cornea is returned to its original position.

EPI-LASIK

The surface of the cornea gets lifted with a special device, the laser treatment will take place and after that the surface of the cornea will be put back, just like a 'living' contact lens. This is a treatment method that was invented and developed by Prof. Dr. Pallikaris. EPI-LASIK is an alternative for PRK or LASIK and is suitable for patients with a thing cornea surface. This treatment method is only performed by Dünya Eye Hospital and by a small amount of centres in other countries. This technique protects the cornea surface.

PERSONAL LASER METHODS

WAVEFRONT LASIK

Wavefront involves sending a light beam to the eye and applying laser tailored for a specific person, after evaluating the image obtained from the retinal layer. This method is specifically preferred in patients with night vision problems or dilated pupils, in order to avoid scattering, diffraction and haloing around light after laser. After evaluation with special wavefront analyzing devision, the decision for surgery is made.

TOPOLASER

This is a laser treatment that will be performed on patients that have undergone an un-successfull laser treatment in an earlier stage. (In case of decentralizing of an ablation treatment) or on patients that have scars in their cornea caused by several illnesses or traumas. This method is capable of performing individual laser therapy.

Q VALUE TREATMENT

This is a completely new and not yet equaled technique that will determine the adjustments of the cornea for every patient individually. The excentric values of the horizontal and vertical meridians of the cornea and the K-values are measured by the Allegro Topolyzer. These values are put in the module to determine the aspheric area.

INTRA-OCULAIRE LENS METHOD

When pre-research shows that a laser treatment is not possible, the following alternatives are possible:

REFRACTIVE LENS IMPLANT

This treatment is often advised for older patients that cannot be treated with a laser. The natural lens of the eye will be replaced with an artificial lens. With a multi-focal lens it is possible to solve hyperopia and myopia at the same time. Another positive side-effect of this lens is that cataract cannot evolve at a later stage since the natural lens has been replaced with an artificial lens.

FAKIK-IOL (Intra-oculair lens)

This is a treatment for patients with a short-sight of more than -12 D, long-sight of more than +7 D or with patients with a thin cornea. With this method a second lens is placed in the eye.

OTHER METHODS

This is a treatment for patients above 40 years that have a long-sight to +3.00 D. Radiowaves are used in this treatment. The treatment is effective for patients with a presbyopy to 1.75 D.

INTACS

This is a method where 2 half-circle pieces of perspex are put in the cornea to correct myopia to -5.00 D. Some patients with keratoconus and with a thin cornea can apply for this treatment.

PERMAVISION

(Intra-corneal contactlenses): With this method a flap will be created in the cornea and under that for patienst with a hyperopia to +7.00 D a special lens will be placed.

CROSS LINKING

Collagen UV-crosslinking is a method to stop and slow down the progressive degeneration of the cornea with Keratoconus.
